Springfield's Future Is Taking Shape One Internship at a Time
In Springfield, Ohio, high school students are doing more than preparing for their futures. They're stepping directly into them. Through the Magnify Internship Program, students across the region were matched with real employers for real opportunities. It's a powerful example of Springfield becoming a destination for jobs and careers that start early and stay local.
Preparing tomorrow's workforce begins today. That's the core idea behind Magnify, a standout initiative fueling the talent pipeline as part of the broader EXPAND 2029 strategy. This year's program welcomed 61 high school students from 11 schools and one homeschooler to a career readiness experience far beyond the classroom.
With guidance, training, and direct employer engagement, students weren't just learning about jobs. They were landing them.
"The Magnify Internship Program provides young talent with invaluable hands-on experience, fostering community and collaboration," said Tony Cooper with Pro-Stratus. "Programs like this are essential in preparing the next generation for the workforce, and we are proud to be a part of it."
Before students ever sat down for interviews, they spent time learning the ropes—from résumé writing and interview prep to personal presentation and communication skills. This training, led by major employers like Assurant, Woeber Mustard, Dole Fresh Vegetables, and Clothes That Work, helped lay the foundation for success.
Support came from across the community. Organizations like Clark State College, OhioMeansJobs Clark County, and the Springfield Small Business Development Center offered insights and resources, reinforcing Springfield's all-in approach to building up its next generation.
On April 30 and May 1, students met with over 20 local employers for one-on-one interviews, many of whom walked away with internship offers. With help from the YouScience platform, each student was matched with companies that aligned with their strengths and interests. The result? More than 130 interviews led to dozens of meaningful placements.
"The Magnify Internship Program is an incredible journey to be a part of for both the employers and students," said Karissa Lisch, Human Resources Manager at Woeber Mustard. "We hired a summer intern in 2024 and she's continued to work throughout the school year. She's been instrumental to our Food Safety & Quality department, especially during an unexpected medical leave."
While some internships started as summer positions, many have grown into longer-term roles, allowing students to deepen their skills and employers to build lasting relationships with emerging talent. The program also helps young people see a professional future within reach and their hometown.
"These students in the Magnify Internship Program could possibly be our future CEOs, COOs, and CFOs," said Jamie Gibson, Recruiting and Talent Engagement Manager at The Ohio Masonic Communities. "As some of the established market begins to retire, ushering in new employees into the market is important to help them grow and establish themselves in their chosen careers."
Magnify isn't just about internships; it's a building block for EXPAND 2029, the region's long-range plan to strengthen the local workforce and create opportunity from within. By helping young people gain real-world experience early, Springfield lays the groundwork for long-term economic health.
This initiative shows students what's possible in their own community and proves to employers that the next wave of talent is already here, eager and ready to contribute.
Businesses, educators, and community leaders are all part of the Magnify Internship Program's success; there's room for more. If you want to connect with the future of Springfield's workforce, now is the time.
